A Dead Soul

The sounds of alarm bells rung across his room. Echoes of dying dreams left a thickness that weighed him on his bed. Every morning he found it difficult to wake up. He had tried numerous methods to force himself out of bed. This time, he placed his phone across the other room and connected it to the Bluetooth speaker in his room. He thought that by doing this, he will have to wake up and find the phone in order to switch the alarm off. Instead, he simply walked to the speaker and muted the volume.

It felt like a chore to wake up. The sounds of his alarm and the rays of the first sunlight can wake the body, but only purpose can wake up the spirit. Only purpose can wake the soul of a man to conquer each day that passes. Slowly, his purpose was slowly dying along with his dreams.

He lay in his bed thinking about the day ahead. The thought alone rendered him mute and immobile. The thought alone rendered him weak and defeated. The thought that he will spend the entire day in an air-conditioned cubicle choked him. This, to some, does not seem like a bad idea. One would say, rather he, who is in an air-conditioned cubicle, is better off. Imagine how hard it must be for a 46-year-old mother of three who wakes up to go hold on to a vehicle collecting other people’s trash the whole day. Imagine how had it must be for the 58-year-old father of two who wakes up to pave roads for a society that looks at him like he is scum. Compared to these people, he has it soft. But another person might say to each his own. For him, being in an air-conditioned cubicle the whole day was torture.

In his heart, he yearned for a simple life. He yearned for a life where he could spend an hour or two basking in the sun. He yearned for a life where he could wake up and not feel the pressures of living. He yearned to wake up in a beautiful house with a wife and children. He yearned for a life where he did not have to work in order to enjoy life. He envies the young rappers who can decide to retire tomorrow and be financially well off for the rest of their living days. He envies the soccer stars who play for the love of the sport and not for financial reasons. He envies the authors who wrote successful books and are currently living off the royalties of that for life. He wakes up every morning hating the fact that he needs to work to be alive.

Even though he was awake, his soul was not.
