He sat by the corner of his bed. He wondered what was on her mind. She was sleeping peacefully, with a faint smile sealing her dreams. He looked at her and wondered what was on her mind. In his hand was her phone, with a message that did not come from him.
He felt his heart sink into his chest. So deep it sunk, it forced him to hunch over. A hot rush of tears raced to his eyes. He had to hold them back. He had to be a man and silence his cry. A text message from an unknown number. A text message that spoke words of pleasure and intimacy created the night before- in the apartment, he owned.
He was never good with women growing up. This gave him the opportunity to focus on his studies and his career. While his classmates were hosting extravagant parties and inviting the coolest females, he was locked in his room studying. Certain nights he would hear his roommate whispering sweet nothings to someone’s sweetheart. She in return would sing to him songs that pleased his masculinity. These songs were sung late at night rung in his mind. He felt defeated by them and knew that success was his only way out.
The scale of the universe must always balance itself. As his classmates and roommate began to experience the true realities of life, he was beginning to reap the first fruits of his labour. He was the first of his generation to get a permanent job. He was the first of his generation to buy his own car. However, he was the last of his generation to fall in love.
She meant the man at the local mall. At the time, he was still working up the ranks of the management firm he worked for. Through a friend, they knew who he was. They respected him for the car he drove. At the young age of 28, he was driving cars that retired teachers bought with their severance packages. He dressed tailor-made suits and smelt of the most expensive perfumes as supposed to the deadbeats that they dated in their years of study. In university, the deadbeats were alive with excitement. Now that they approaching 30, this guy brought the sophisticated excitement that they desperately needed.
He was on lunch when he saw her. He had never been good with women. In the last 6 years, he had not been with a woman. In the last 6 years, he had used that time to work on his career. He was a prospect to be the youngest director of the firm. As a reward bonus for his outstanding work, the senior directors awarded him with a large amount of money. So large, it afforded him to purchase his third car. He felt lonely but he was happy that at least, he did not have to worry about his next paycheck- unlike some of his former classmates that remind him of “the good times”.
While eating lunch he noticed a group of girls looking at him. The kind of girls that in his university years would have not given him the light of day. He knew that they were parasites. But he yearned for the warmth of a woman and so, he found himself looking back at them.
Her friends saw that he was looking at them. They knew how to play the game. They acted as if they are not interested. The lady kept throwing hints. She winked at him. She kept switching her legs. She laughed at his direction and would look back at her friend. The charm was working as he rose to the table to approach her.
His heart froze. He looked at the female who was wearing a skirt so short that he couldn’t discipline his eyes. She kept switching her legs, crossing them and uncrossing them, he felt as if a wildfire erupted in him. He did not know what to do. He then remembered that he was no longer in university. Going to the gym had transformed his physique. His father taught him that a man’s wallet measures his handsomeness. His wallet was as deep as the Nile and he knew it. Confidence overcame him. He went to the table of the females.
After that eventful day, 3 months later he was in love with his girl. He bought her gifts very week and assured her that she will never lack. He owned the apartment he was staying in and told to move in with him. He gave her the keys to the one car he owned. She was overwhelmed but enjoyed the treatment. To her, it was nothing new or special. She had four other men who treated her like a princess.
After a romantic dinner, they went to bed early. He told her that he would be joining her shortly. He wanted to wrap his day and prepare for the next day. As he was going to bed, he saw her phone ring. She was already fast asleep and so, he rushed to grab the phone to put it on silent. Little did he know that it would be his heart that would be put on silent. Silent to her beauty. Silent to her warmth.
Silent to love.
